Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has come down heavily on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his comments about the Victory Day of Bangladesh, saying that it is nothing but an insult to the country’s independence and sovereignty.
“Modi’s statement is blatantly dishonourable and disrespectful to the independence and sovereignty of our country,” Prof Mia Golam Parwar, secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, said in a statement on Tuesday.
Earlier on Monday, in a post on X, Modi wrote, “On Tuesday, on Vijay Diwas, we honour the courage and sacrifices of the brave soldiers who contributed to India’s historic victory in 1971. Their selfless dedication and unwavering resolve safeguarded our nation and brought glory to us.
“This day is a tribute to their extraordinary valour and their unshakeable spirit. Their sacrifices will forever inspire generations and remain deeply embedded in our nation’s history,” Modi said.
Expressing the party’s strong condemnation over the remarks, Parwar said Jamaat was concerned about the Indian hegemony in Bangladesh 53 years ago it has been proved authentic through Modi’s statement.
