A Dhaka court on Saturday (August 23) sent MyTV Chairman and Managing Director Nasir Uddin to jail after completion of a five-day remand in connection with the killing of Asadul Haque Babu during the 2024 July Uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rakibul Hasan Ahmed passed the order this afternoon following a hearing.

CID Inspector Khan Md Erfan, the investigating officer of the case, produced Nasir before the court after remand and requested that he be kept in jail.

The petition stated that the accused, in his capacity as head of a television station, had misused his influence for partisan and personal interests.

It alleged that he acted as a supporter of the then Awami League government, opposed the opposition movement, and was directly or indirectly involved in the killing of Asadul Haque Babu.

The petition further said Nasir had spread propaganda against the anti-discrimination student movement and provided provocative statements.

Important information and evidence had been obtained during interrogation, which was under verification. It argued that if released on bail, Nasir could abscond or hamper the investigation.

Defence lawyer Mohammad Khairul Islam sought bail for Nasir, while Kaiyum Hossain Nayan opposed the plea on behalf of the state.

After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition and ordered Nasir to be sent to jail.

According to the case statement, Asadul Haque Babu participated in a demonstration in the Jatrabari area on 5 August last year during the July Uprising. He was shot in the chest and later died in hospital.

His father, Zainal Abedin, filed a murder case on 30 August naming ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 25 others.

Nasir was listed as the 22nd accused, while his son Tawhid Afridi was the 11th accused.

Nasir was arrested on 17 August from Gulshan, and his five-day remand was granted the following day.
