Staff Correspondent:
Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has said his party has taken to the streets to demand justice, reform and a new constitution.
He made the statement on Monday while addressing a street rally as the chief guest in Sirajganj. The event was part of the party’s July programs.
Addressing the local public, Nahid said: “We have stepped into the struggle to abolish the fascist system and establish a new settlement, a new nation. From Sirajganj to every district across the country, you supported us. In the same spirit, we must unite to demand justice, reforms and a new constitution.”
Calling for a neutral role from the administration, he said: “We said we want a neutral administration and judicial system after the mass uprising. In the past, we saw them working in favour of one party. We do not want to see that again. We have seen what was done from Aynaghor to elsewhere. So how can we move toward an election without justice and reforms? If there is no justice, how will we face the families of the martyrs?”
“We are hearing that DC and SP offices are turning into party offices. We are warning you: do not become another Benazir (former inspector general of police), do not become another DB Harun (former DB chief). Otherwise, another Nahid-Sarjis will rise to the streets again.”
At the rally, the NCP’s chief organizer for the southern region, Hasnat Abdullah, said: “We hear that people are being threatened if they want to join the NCP. From the grassroots to every unit of the NCP, we are ready to give our lives for the activists. Just inform us. We only need the time it takes to come from Dhaka.”
Stating that the general public will eventually determine the leadership, he said: “My statement has displeased Bashundhara’s media. I am not afraid. I will say it again and again.”
