The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is planning to increase the tax rate for ultra-rich individuals from the existing 30% to 35%, a move that could come into effect from the 2027-28 fiscal year.
“We have a plan to implement this from the year after the next fiscal year. I will place the proposal before the finance minister,” NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan said at a pre-budget discussion with leaders of the Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) at the NBR headquarters in Agargaon today (31 March).
He said the revised rate could apply to a “super-rich group” – those who earn above Tk1 crore annually, or potentially higher thresholds such as Tk1.5 crore or Tk5 crore.
The NBR chief also indicated that the upcoming budget for FY2026-27 may include measures to increase the prices of tobacco products.
Among others present at the discussion were ERF President Doulot Akter Mala, General Secretary Abul Kashem, officials of NBR, and other senior leaders of ERF.
