Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury yesterday said a new decision on fuel is likely soon, noting that although the country is not facing any immediate fuel crisis, sustaining oil and gas supply at high prices remains a concern.
“No fuel crisis has yet been created in the country. However, how long it will be possible to continue supplying oil and gas at high prices is a matter of concern. Therefore, a new decision on fuel may come soon,” he said.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at an award-giving ceremony under the Academic Excellence Scholarship Program of Youngone–Chittagong Independent University (CIU), held at the auditorium of Youngone Corporation in the EPZ area of Anwara upazila in Chattogram on Friday afternoon.
He said the global fuel situation is affecting not only Bangladesh but the entire world, including the United States. As most of the country’s fuel is imported from the Middle East, the government is maintaining international communications to address the issue.
“Above all, we must ensure energy security. There is no scope for compromise in this regard,” he added.
Highlighting ongoing measures, he said a savings programme has been introduced to tackle the situation, urging participation from all sectors. “Everyone—from the government to the general public—must take part and be economical in the use of energy,” he said.
On the capital market, the minister said efforts will be made to create a favourable environment for investors, adding that capital-based investment will be encouraged over bank loan–dependent investment.
Referring to supply chain stability, he said the supply of essential goods is being maintained, describing it as a challenge that requires collective cooperation.
The minister also underscored the need for stronger collaboration between universities and industry, saying such linkage is essential for improving education and research quality. He noted that a lack of such cooperation in Bangladesh has contributed to unemployment among graduates across different levels of education.
“Emphasis must be placed on technology-based education,” he said, adding that universities should incorporate technology-oriented curricula and expand relevant faculties to enhance employment opportunities both at home and abroad.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Youngone Corporation and Korea EPZ founder chairman and CEO Kihak Sung distributed scholarship certificates among students at the event.
