Sports Desk:
Neymar has begun his recovery after knee surgery. He is working toward a return with one clear goal in mind. He wants a place in Brazil’s squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Neymar had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on December 22. The operation was done to fix a meniscus problem. He had delayed the surgery to play the final matches of the season and help Santos avoid relegation.
The forward scored five goals in his last four games before going under the knife. The surgery was performed by Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar. Soon after, Neymar started his rehabilitation work.
His father and agent, Neymar de Silva Santos Sr., said the injury hit him hard. He even thought about retirement at one stage. But his focus has now shifted back to football. He is aiming for the World Cup and recently signed a contract extension with Santos until the end of the year.
Neymar returned to training this week. He worked in the gym at the Santos training ground. He did specific exercises to build strength in his left knee. He is expected to be ready for the start of the new Brazilian Serie A season later this month.
The 33-year-old has not played for the Brazil national football team since October 2023. He suffered an ACL and meniscus injury during World Cup qualifiers.
Neymar remains a key figure in Brazilian football history. He has scored 79 goals for his country. He is Brazil’s all-time top scorer. He also ranks second in appearances, behind only Cafu.
