The National Identity Card (NID) services across Bangladesh have been temporarily suspended due to a technical issue preventing access to the central server, the Election Commission (EC) confirmed on Tuesday.
According to ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the National Identity Registration Division, the problem stems from the failure to receive a one-time password (OTP), which is required to log into the NID server after entering valid user credentials.
“To log in, users need an OTP after entering their ID and password. That OTP is currently not being received, which has disabled access to the server,” Kabir explained.
He clarified that the issue is not with the EC’s server infrastructure itself but rather with the OTP generation system managed by an external service provider responsible for facilitating NID services.
“The service provider is currently working to resolve the issue. Once the OTP problem is fixed, normal NID operations will resume,” Kabir added.
The temporary disruption has affected all NID-related services nationwide, including new registrations, corrections, and reissuance requests. No specific timeline was provided for the restoration of services.
