BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored the need for an elected government to ensure the country’s overall stability.

“We are calling for an election, not in pursuit of power, but for the sake of the country’s overall stability,” he said while addressing a programme held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He also expressed his optimism about forming a national government with all political parties if BNP is voted to power in the next general election.

“We will not govern the country alone if we are voted to power. So where is the problem? Where is the doubt? The people have started to lose trust in you (interim government),” he said.

Reshape the Election Commission, public administration and the judiciary and then move forward to hold the national election, he said adding that the remaining tasks would be handled by the elected government.

He said many top officials within the government are engaged in making confusing statements over many issues, including election. “Stay aside from creating confusion. Put heed to a specific point,” he said.

Citing several repressive and oppressive acts of the just ousted Awami League government, Fakhrul said, “Sheikh Mujibur Rahman indulged in fascism during his rule. The countrymen were fed up with the authoritarian regime. At one stage, some misguided army official assassinated him.”

Famine took place during the Awami League rule while Ziaur Rahman brought the situation under control after taking charge of the country, said the BNP leader.

Due to his prudent politics, the United Nations made him (Ziaur Rahman) a middleman to stop the Iran-Iraq war, said Mirza Fakhrul.

Referring to his party-placed 31-point reform proposals, Fakhrul said it would help upholding the people’s overall rights.
