Any amendment to the Constitution must be done in Parliament–there is no scope for it outside of that, said BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a memorial meeting on Saturday afternoon at the ICMAB auditorium in Nilkhet, Dhaka. The event was organized to mark the fifth death anniversary of former BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Mannan.
He said, “Discussions on constitutional amendments are ongoing. If the Constitution is to be amended, it must be done from within Parliament. For that, every party must seek a mandate from the people. And that process has to take place inside Parliament.”
He further stated that any reforms must be carried out through a transparent and democratic process, and there is no legitimate way to implement them outside of Parliament. Those attempting to undermine Bangladesh’s democratic future or interfere with the electoral process are clearly acting against democratic principles.
Highlighting the need for a change in political culture, the BNP leader said, “No matter how many reforms we try to bring, it won’t be effective unless we can change the political culture. We must learn to respect differing opinions. We must be tolerant. Only then can we collectively move the country forward.”
Amir Khasru also said that the opposition alliance remains united. “Many are claiming that the unity among the parties has broken after August 5. But I don’t see any disunity. Every party has its own philosophy and thinking. We will agree where we can, and the rest must be taken to the people. Their decision must then be passed in Parliament.”
