The government has decided to abolish the monthly rental fee for prepaid electricity meters.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku confirmed the development on Sunday, stating that the decision will be implemented very soon, addressing long-standing frustration among consumers.
While speaking to reporters, the minister said there had been a dissatisfaction among customers over the monthly meter charge.
”We have closely monitored the issue. Our goal is to ensure consumer-friendly electricity services, and that is why we have decided to completely withdraw this meter charge system.”
Currently, prepaid electricity users are required to pay a fixed monthly fee as a ‘meter rent.’ Consumers have long questioned why they must continue paying this charge even after covering the cost of the meter itself.
The issue has sparked widespread criticism, with demands for its removal raised across social media platforms and by various civic groups. Officials hope that the new decision will help reduce the overall monthly electricity expenses for consumers.
