The Bangladesh Air Force has confirmed that there are no plans to move its bases from Dhaka, where warplanes remain stationed, emphasising their critical role in ensuring the capital’s air defence and national security.

At a press conference held at Bangladesh Aviation and Aerospace University in Tejgaon, Dhaka, on Monday, July 28, Air Commodore Shahidul Islam, Director of the Air Operations Directorate, said that maintaining bases in the capital is essential for rapid response and airspace protection.

“Air defence of Dhaka is non-negotiable,” he said. “Having a fighter jet base in the capital is crucial for national security. Many countries around the world also maintain similar bases in or near their capitals. There is currently no plan to relocatethis strategic facility.”

His remarks came in response to growing public concern following the tragic crash of an F-7 fighter jet into Milestone School and College in Uttara on July 21, which claimed 35 lives, including students and staff.

Air Commodore Md Mizanur Rahman, Chief Coordinator of the Air Force Emergency Coordination Center, also addressed the press, providing updates on the ongoing investigation.

He confirmed that the Air Force launched immediate rescue operations on the day of the crash and established a high-level investigation committee within hours.

An expert team from China is expected to join the probe, as the aircraft involved was of Chinese origin.

“International assistance will be instrumental in identifying the root cause of the accident,” Air Commodore Mizanur Rahman said. “We are committed to a thorough, transparent, and technical investigation.”

The Air Force iterated its commitment to supporting the families of the deceased and the injured.

“We will provide all possible assistance, medical, financial, and emotional, for as long as necessary,” he said. “Our hearts remain with the victims and their loved ones.”

As the nation mourns, the Air Force has pledged to implement all necessary safety and operational reforms to prevent future tragedies – while maintaining the strategic importance of its presence in the capital.
