Stressing the need for a shift in mindset to refrain from creating unnecessary noise, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Monday said preventing noise pollution and raising awareness can significantly reduce the risk of hearing loss.
“Hearing health is not just a personal concern but also a vital environmental and public health issue,” she said while addressing a discussion marking World Hearing Day 2025, held at the ENT and Head-Neck Cancer Hospital & Institute at agargaon.
This year’s theme of the day is “Changing Mindsets: Empower Yourself.”
Rizwana Hasan pointed out that noise pollution is a major cause of hearing impairment, particularly in urban areas where excessive vehicle horns, industrial noise, and loudspeakers contribute to the problem.
While the government has undertaken several initiatives to curb noise pollution, shesaid public awareness and responsibility are equally crucial.
“We must stop unnecessary honking and excessive noise in social events and daily activities,” she said.
The event was presided over by Siddiqur Rahman Chowdhury, President of the ENT and Head-Neck Cancer Hospital & Institute and former secretary.
Other speakers included Prof. Dr. Jahanara Alauddin, Vice President of the Foundation; Kamrul Hasan Torofdar, Member Secretary; Prof. Muhammad Abdullah of Bangladesh ENT Hospital; Prof. Dr. Firoz Ahmed Khan of Uttara Modern Hospital; and Senior Consultant Dr. Ali Imam.
Medical professionals, health experts, and people from various fields attended the discussion.
Experts underscored the importance of regular health check-ups, noise control, and awareness campaigns to address hearing-related issues.
Prior to the discussion, a colorful rally was held to mark the occasion, said a press release.
