Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the leader of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been appointed as the leader of the opposition in Bangladesh’s 13th parliament. The decision was taken on Tuesday at a meeting of the 11-party alliance’s parliamentary group following the swearing-in of the newly elected members.
Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher, Jamaat’s deputy leader and newly elected MP for the Cumilla-11 constituency, will serve as the deputy leader of the opposition. Nahid Islam, convenor of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has been named as the opposition’s chief whip.
The appointments were decided during the parliamentary party meeting. A formal announcement is expected shortly in a joint press statement from the 11-party alliance.
