Police beef up surveillance to prevent highway dacoity and robbery in Sirajganj

Sirajganj district police and its all relevant wings have beefed up their surveillance to prevent robbery and dacoity on the highway ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Meanwhile, concerned police stations have increased their patrolling on the highway and tightened their security measure to avert further untoward incidents.

The initiative was taken on the directive of Md. Faruk Hossain, Superintendent of Police (SP) in Sirajganj after few sporadic incidents of robberies and dacoities on the highway especially at the western part of Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge in the district.

On Sunday evening, a gang of armed dacoits numbering seven to eight looted seven mobile phone sets and cash Tk 80,000 from the passengers aboard a microbus on the western connecting highway of the Jamuna Bridge in Sirajganj’s Kamarkhand upazila.

Mohammad Anarul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Jamuna Bridge Western Police Station said, “The dacoit members threw bricks at the front glass of the vehicle, forcing the driver to stop in Konabari area at 8:30 pm when it was heading to Rajshhai from Dhaka.”

The dacoit members equipped with arms and sharp weapons looted seven mobile phones and around Tk 80,000 in cash putting them at gun point.

A case was also filed at Jamuna Bridge Western Police Station in this connection.

Police visited the scene after the incident at the same night.

Seeking anonymity, a senior officer of Sirajganj police said, “None of the perpetrators will be spared. All will be brought to book shortly. Police have already beefed up surveillance on the directive of Police Super Md. Faruk Hossain to prevent all kinds of criminal activities including dacoity and robbery on the highway. Besides, Traffic Department of Sirajganj Police and Highway Police will work to ensure safety and smooth journey of homebound people during the upcoming Eid holidays.”
