Staff Correspondent:
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has categorically said that the police are now required mandatorily to show their identities and the exact reason prior to arresting anyone.
The law minister said this while addressing a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Thursday.
The family members and lawyer of the arrested persons must be notified within 12 hours of being brought to the respective police station after arrest, he said.
He said that the government has brought an amendment to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to prevent arbitrary arrests and false cases.
Earlier in the day, the cabinet division in principle gave approval to the amendment during a meeting held with Chief Adviser Prof Mohammad Yunus in the chair.
The government came up with the move amid allegations of filing a huge number of false and motivated cases since the fall of the Awami League regime on 5 August last year.
According to the constitution and the CrPC, a person must be produced before the nearest magistrate court within 24 hours of arrest.
