Political parties have reached a consensus on appointing the chief election commissioner (CEC) and other commissioners of the Election Commission (EC), said National Consensus Commission Vice-President Ali Riaz on Wednesday.
He revealed the development at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
According to the decision, the parliament speaker will lead a five-member selection committee to review the applications of potential candidates, before ultimately appointing them as election commissioners.
Other committee members would be the prime minister, opposition leader, opposition’s deputy speaker, and an Appellate Division judge to represent the chief justice.
The selection committee will begin the process of inviting applications from potential candidates 90 days before the end of current EC’s tenure.
