A pregnant wife of a Saudi expatriate has been allegedly strangled to death at Chatmohar upazila in Pabna district.

The incident took place at around 11 AM in the village of Atlanka Purvapara under Mulgram union of the upazila on Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shapla Khatun, wife of Monzil Hossain, a resident of the same area.

According to locals, Shapla was married to Monzil Hossain, a Saudi expatriate two to three years ago. After Monzil went abroad, his wife was frequently subjected to torture by her mother-in-law, Monowara Khatun and stepson, Md Shipon Hossain.

The seven-month pregnant Shapla’s body was found in her bed by her mother-in-law and stepson. When locals became aware of the matter, they detained Shipon and Monowara and handed them over to the police.

Confirming the death, Chatmohar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Nayan Kumar Das said that Shapla’s body has been recovered and sent to the Pabna General Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

Monowara and Shipon, who are involved in this incident, have been arrested. Further legal action is being taken, the OC added.
