Information and broadcasting adviser Nahid Islam on Wednesday said the interim government has started talks with political parties on meeting the popular demand of removing President Mohammed Shahabuddin, urging people to avoid staging demonstrations in this regard.

When addressing reporters at the Secretariat, the adviser also clarified that fulfilling the demand of president’s resignation only requires political consensus rather than constitutional or legal steps.

Therefore, Nahid warned that creating unnecessary unrest over the issue will only strengthen the ongoing domestic and foreign conspiracies to unsettle the country, which was freed from the clutches of fascism just over two months ago.

The transitional government is sympathetic to any logical demand raised by the people, and the government has already initiated discussions with different stakeholders on removing Shahabuddin from his post – but people must be patient and stay united, Nahid said.

He, however, noted the government would prioritise stability and security of the state on the question of President Shahabuddin’s resignation.

Nahid asked people to also stay alert against the creation of chaos over the issue, and avoid demonstrations in front of Bangabhaban – the president’s official residence. A solution can come only through discussions, the adviser said.
