Probe against 8 police officials ordered to be completed within 2 months

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Thursday ordered the completion of the investigation within two months into the case filed against former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former NTMC Director General Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, and eight other officials for crimes against humanity in the July-August genocide. The tribunal has been asked to submit a progress report on the investigation to the tribunal by February 20.

A three-member tribunal led by ICT Tribunal chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder passed the order on Thursday (December 19).

Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam, Prosecutors BM Sultan Mahmud and Gazi MH Tamim spoke for the prosecution in court.

Earlier, eight officials, including former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former NTMC Director General Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, were produced before the International Crimes Tribunal in a case filed against them for crimes against humanity in the July-August genocide.

The other five are – former Dhaka District Police Superintendent Md. Abdullah Al Kafi, former Mirpur DMP DC Md. Jasim Uddin Molla, former Dhaka Additional Superintendent (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidur Islam, former Gulshan Police Station OC Mazharul Haque, former Jatrabari Police Station OC Abul Hasan and former Dhaka North DB Inspector Md. Arafat Hossain.

On November 20, the tribunal ordered the completion of the investigation within a month against eight officials, including the former police chief and the former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Center (NTMC), in a case filed against them for crimes against humanity in the July-August genocide. At the same time, the court ordered them to be kept in jail in the tribunal case. The next hearing of the case was fixed for today.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, chairman of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), passed the order.

Earlier, eight officials, including the former police chief and former director general of the NTMC, were arrested in a case filed against them for crimes against humanity in connection with the July-August genocide.

The eight officers are – former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former NTMC Director General Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan, former Dhaka District Police Superintendent Md. Abdullah Al Kafi, former Mirpur DMP DC Md. Jasim Uddin Molla, former Dhaka Additional Superintendent (Savar Circle) Md. Shahidur Islam, former Jatrabari Police Station OC Abul Hasan, former Gulshan Police Station OC Mazharul Haque and former Dhaka North DB Inspector Md. Arafat Hossain.

On October 27, a three-member tribunal led by ICT tribunal chairman Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder approved the prosecution’s petition and ordered the eight officials to be produced.
