Protesters have vandalised and set fire to properties associated with the Awami League and its leaders in many places across Bangladesh, including in the capital, Dhaka.
The unrest, which began Wednesday evening, has spread to multiple districts.
The attacks coincided with an online address by deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in exile since her government was toppled on Aug 5, urging her party members to resist the interim government.
DHAKA
In Dhaka, protesters attacked the historic Dhanmondi-32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding leader, vandalising and setting it on fire.
The violence continued into Thursday morning, with demonstrators using bulldozers to partially demolish the structure.
The house of Sheikh Hasina, named Sudha Sadan after her husband MA Wazed Miah (nicknamed Sudha Miah), was vandalised and set on fire.
KUSHTIA
A portion of the three-story house of Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif, a former MP from Kushtia-3 (Sadar), was demolished with an excavator.
The house had previously been vandalised and set on fire on Aug 4 and 5.
Meanwhile, agitating students removed the names of Sheikh Hasina and her family members from three halls at Islamic University in Kushtia.
Besides, around 9 pm, they hung posters of Hasina on a damaged mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the campus and threw threw shoes at them for about 30 minutes.
CHUADANGA
As part of the ‘Excavator Procession’ by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, four murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib were vandalised in Chuadanga district town.
The district Awami League office was also attacked.
JASHORE
Seven sculptures, murals, and nameplates of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina were vandalised in Jashore.
Additionally, a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a sculpture of former Education Minister ASHK Sadique were damaged in Keshabpur, Jashore, on Wednesday night.
BARISHAL
The houses of former mayor and Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Sadiq Abdullah, as well as senior Awami League leader Amir Hossain Amu, were demolished with bulldozers.
The demolition continued into Thursday.
Abdullah’s father, former MP Abul Hasanat Abdullah, is president of the Barishal district Awami League and a cousin of Sheikh Hasina.
The house of Amu, located on Bogra Road in Barishal city, was also torn down.
BHOLA
The residence of Awami League Advisory Council member and former Bhola-1 MP Tofail Ahmed was vandalised and set on fire just after midnight.
The fire continued to burn into the morning on Thursday.
PIROJPUR
Protesters set fire to the homes of former MP AKMA Awal Saydur Rahman and his brother, former mayor Habibur Rahman, on Parerhat Road in Pirojpur.
The houses had previously been set on fire multiple times on Aug 5 and 6 after Hasina’s government fell.
SYLHET
In Sylhet, a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office was destroyed with an excavator.
SUNAMGANJ
In Sunamganj, angry mobs vandalised five murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a shrine
RANGPUR
Murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Begum Rokeya University and Carmichael College were demolished.
The nameplates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall at Begum Rokeya University were also removed.
RAJSHAHI
Former State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam’s village house in Bagha Upazila was set on fire.
His training centre in Safari village was also torched.
At Rajshahi University, students protested to remove all nameplates, graffiti, and writings related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family.
Protesters later defaced some residential halls and renamed them.
The home of Md Nowshad Ali, a former principal of Rajshahi Medical College and a central leader of the Swadhinata Chikitsok Parishad, was also vandalised by masked attackers around midnight.
NATORE
Protesters set fire to the Jannati Palace, the home of former MP Shafiqul Islam (Shimul), which had been abandoned since Hasina’s fall.
PABNA
In Ishwardi, Pabna, the Upazila Awami League office was demolished with excavators.
Nameplates of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina at Pabna Science and Technology University and Government Edward College were also broken.
MYMENSINGH
In Mymensingh, a mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman near Circuit House was damaged with hammers and machetes.
The “Mujib Mural” at Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Trishal was also destroyed.
KISHOREGANJ
In Kishoreganj, protesters declared the district Awami League office a public toilet, painting “Public Toilet” on a broken wall of the abandoned building.
A mural of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the District Freedom Fighters Complex was also vandalised.
CHITTAGONG
Murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Chittagong Medical College and Hospital and Jamalkhan areas were defaced.
COMILLA
In Comilla, former MP AKM Bahauddin Bahar’s house was set on fire, despite previous attacks and looting after Hasina’s fall.
NOAKHALI
The village home of Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader in Companiganj was vandalised, along with a two-storey brick house belonging to his brother Abdul Quader Mirza.
Witnesses said the house had previously been set on fire by students and a mob on Aug 5 and was attacked again on Thursday after being renovated.
NARAYANGANJ
In Narayanganj, pro-BNP lawyers vandalised a portrait of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, smearing it with black ink on the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office.
