A leader gave former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Nurul Haque Nur Tk 4 lakh amid the quota reform movement, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner, also the Detective Branch (DB) Chief, Mohammad Harun-Or-Rashid.

“We are trying to find out how that money was spent,” he said while addressing a press conference organised at the DB office in Dhaka on Saturday.

Providing more details, the DB chief said, “After we took Nur [who is also the president of Gano Adhikar Parishad] into remand, we managed to unearth a lot of information from him. That information is being verified.

“Nur has admitted to one thing. During the movement, a leader gave him Tk 4 lakh. We have also brought in that leader, and he admitted to giving Tk 4 lakh to Nur. We are interrogating the leader to find out why he had given the money to Nur.”

Harun-Or-Rashid mentioned that they have found information on digital communication among the quota movement coordinators.

He then added, “We also have Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) Chairman and former MP Barrister Andaleeve Rahman Partho on a five-day remand. We are trying to learn some details from him.”

On Friday, a court sent Nur to jail in a case lodged over vandalising and setting fire to Setu Bhaban in the capital’s Banani area on July 18.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shakil Ahammed passed the order as police produced Nur before the court after the end of his five-day remand in the case, and pleaded to keep him behind bars till the end of the probe.

On July 21, the court had placed Nur on a five-day remand.

A mob of 250/300 people on July 18 stormed into the premises of Setu Bhaban, vandalised many vehicles and motorbikes, ransacked different sheds and rooms, and later set those on fire. They had also attacked and beat many employees.
