Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday said the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) cannot be used for political purposes.
“Since the inception of the elite force, it was stated that the force would not be used for political purposes. But later it was not maintained,” he said.
The adviser gave this order in a discussion held at the RAB headquarters in Dhaka’s Uttara with the participation of the senior RAB officials, read a press release.
The RAB got involved in various illegal and misdemeanours, including disappearances, murders and unlawful acts, the moment the force was used for political intention, he said.
Jahangir Alam said the lost glory and dignity of the RAB can be restored through love, behaviour, and performance.
“That is why the RAB should work within the law. Illegal orders of superior authorities will be disobeyed. No one will be detained without authorisation and unlawfully. The battalion must stay away from crossfire, disappearances, and murders,” he said.
RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman and high-ranking officials attended the meeting.
