High Court orders to form a high-powered task force to oversee the investigation

The High Court on Monday removed the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from investigating the high-profile murder case of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Mehrun Runi.

The court has also directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to form a high-powered task force to oversee the investigation, with a report to be submitted within the next six months.

The court fixed April 6, 2025, for holding hearing on the matter.

The order was issued on Monday by a High Court bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Muhammad Mahbub ul Islam.

Sagar Sarwar, the news editor of Maasranga Television, and his wife, Mehrun Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered on the night of February 11, 2012, in their rented apartment in West Rajabazar, Dhaka.

Following the murder, Runi’s brother, Nowsher Ali Roman, filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on February 12, 2012.
