Dinajpur Correspondent:

The price of raw chili in the market has decreased by Taka 100 per kg due to the start of their import through the Hili land port of the district following the end of Durga Puja holidays.

Nuzrul Islam, a raw chili trader at Hili land port said that the price of the raw chilies was on the rise due to the eight-day long closure during Durga Puja.

“The price will now come down as imports have started. On Sunday raw chilies are being sold at wholesale prices at Hili land port at Taka 150 to 160 per kg, depending on the quality. Last week, it was sold at 250 to 260 taka per kg,” he said.

Trucks loaded with Indian raw chili have started arriving through the Hili land port since Saturday morning, Dinajpur Land Port Import Exporters Association President Md. Sakhawat Hossain Shilpi told BSS journalists on Sunday.

He said that with the arrival of raw chili at the port, the price has decreased by Taka 100 per kg in the local market since Sunday morning.

Importers at the port, said the price of raw chili had increased due to the closure of import-export activities for eight consecutive days.

They also said that the price will further decrease if imports increase.

Revenue officer of the Hili land port customs department Md. Nizam Uddin said that about 30 tons of raw chilies were imported from India in four trucks till 03:30 pm on Saturday.

Another 30 tons of raw chilies have been imported in four trucks till noon today, he said.

Arrangements are being made to unload the imported raw chilies trucks quickly. The unloaded raw chilies are being purchased by wholesalers in different parts of the country. As a result, the price of raw chilies will come down.

Importers said that the import is slowing down due to heavy rain in India. Despite this, traders are maintaining contact with Indian traders to robust the imports.

Plaban Roy, a port’s raw chili trader, said that imports have started since Saturday after the Durga Puja holidays.

“These raw chilies are being imported from different provinces of India. It is also raining in India, so we are not able to import enough raw chilies. If the rains subside, imports will increase,” he said.

Anil Chandra, a raw chili trader from Hili Bazar, said that they sold domestic raw chilies for Taka 260 per kg on Friday last.

The import of raw chilies from India started on Saturday morning.

“So we are selling them between Taka 100 and Taka 160 per kg depending on quality,” he said.

When Indian raw chilies arrive in the market this afternoon, the price will come down further.

Md. Yusuf Ali, an officer of the Plant Quarantine Department at Hili land port, said that import and export have started since Saturday after the Durga Puja holidays.

“Since raw chilies are perishable goods, all kinds of cooperation is being provided to importers for quick clearance, “he said.
