Sarjis Alam has resigned as the general secretary of July Shaheed Smrity Foundation, which is dedicated for the welfare of last year’s uprising victims, citing time constraints in working for the organisation and the need for enhancing its operational capabilities.

In a facebook post on Wednesday, Sarjis, also a key leader of the July-August 2024 mass uprising, claimed he stopped working for the foundation at the end of last year, and officially handed over duties on 7 January.

He also clarified the organogram of the foundation has been updated. From now, the CEO will execute all tasks, while the governing body would formulate policies.

The current CEO is Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, brother of uprising martyr Mir Mugdho, while the governing body comprises Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and four other interim government advisers.

Until 31 December, the Foundation had provided donations to families of 628 of the total 826 martyrs, and to 2,000 of the total 11,000 injured in the uprising.

In his facebook post, Sarjis highlighted his decision to step down as “an act of bravery,” rather than a show of “weakness.” It requires honesty and courage to face one’s limitations and make tough choices, the student protest leader claimed.
