The teacher was killed by an angry mob after allegations surfaced of the rape of a student

A Correspondent, Khagrachhari:

The Khagrachhari district administration on Tuesday imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure in Khagrachhari Sadar upazila after a clash between two groups following the lynching of a teacher.

The order, put in force at 3pm, will remain effective until further notice.

A teacher named Sohel Rana, 45, was killed by an angry mob of students at Khagrachari Government Technical School and College at about 1pm after allegations of rape of a student surfaced.

Khagrachhari Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sujan Chandra Roy said he, along with the additional superintendent of police and some journalists, were injured when they were trying to calm the enraged students.

Violence erupted between two groups after news of Sohel’s death spread on social media, leading to the imposition of Section 144.

At the time of writing, clashes between the two groups were still ongoing.

Section 144 of the CrPC grants executive magistrates the power to impose restrictions on public assemblies if deemed necessary “in urgent cases of nuisance or apprehended danger.”

Notably, violence erupted in Khagrachhari’s Noapara area on September 18 after one Md Mamun was lynched on suspicion of theft.

As the conflict spread, clashes the next day led to the deaths of three people in Khagrachhari and one in Rangamati.
