Sports Desk:
The Kushtia stadium will be inaugurated as “Shaheed Abrar Fahad Stadium” on Thursday (March 6) following renovation works. The stadium has been reportedly renovated at a cost of Tk40 crore.
Around 12 pm, Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan and Abrar’s father Barkatullah will jointly inaugurate the revamped stadium which will host all kinds of sports.
The stadium was renamed as “Sheikh Kamal Stadium” in 2020 by the then Awami League autocrats. However, in November last year, the Interim Government again changed the name to honour BUET student Abrar Fahad, martyred by Awami League goons for his critical facebook post, following popular demands.
Kushtia District Sports Officer Tanvir Hossain told reporters construction works hit a temporary pause following the July-August Uprising last year. Then, the works resumed in full swing as officials consistently inspected the site.
The revamped stadium will be the first in Khulna division capable of hosting both cricket and football matches, Tanvir said.
Rokeya Khatun, mother of Abrar Fahad, told reporters the renaming of the sports facility after her son’s name will make the martyr forever memorable in Kushtia and across the country. She prayed so that her son gets heavenly peace in the afterlife.
