Hundreds of people from all walk of life including teachers, students, socio-cultural activists and political personalities staged demonstrations in Shahzadpur demanding closure of liquor shop.
The demonstrators also brought out a procession from Shahzadpur Government Pilot High School and ended it at the upazila headquarter after marching the main roads in the town.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to the UNO Kamruzzaman and OC Sabuj Rana demanding rapid action in this regard.
The demonstrators said, local agitating people on July 12 last carried out vandalism at the liquor shop of Manik Sarker, which is running brisk business in the upazila town for long after managing law enforcers. Later, Narcotics Control Department officials on the directive of Deputy Commissioner (DC) sealed of the shop on July 14.
But, the shop was opened again with the demand of Bagdi community, also indigenous people, descended from people with Dravidian links, found in the Indian state of West Bengal and Bangladesh, especially in Shahzadpur. People of Bagdi community came to Shahzadpur from India for pulling palanquin of Rabindranath Tagore during his regime.
