State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has said the government is committed to ensuring exemplary punishment for human traffickers responsible for the deaths of Bangladeshis attempting a dangerous Mediterranean crossing via Libya.
Speaking to reporters at Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday, she stressed that the long-term solution lies in ending such inhumane activities. “Human traffickers must be punished under both domestic and international laws,” she said.
In the latest incident, at least 18 Bangladeshis were among several deceased migrants who died while attempting to reach Greece through an illegal and perilous sea route from Libya, according to officials.
Describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable, the state minister said trafficking networks; often involving operatives from multiple countries, lure migrants with false promises of reaching Europe, only to subject them to life-threatening journeys.
She added that Bangladesh missions abroad are maintaining constant communication with relevant authorities, particularly in Greece, to gather detailed information about the victims and survivors.
“Our missions are working round the clock. The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment is also engaged to provide necessary support to those rescued,” she said.
Officials said survivors have been taken to hospitals and camps, where authorities are verifying their identities and completing formalities for repatriation.
Shama Obaed emphasized that identifying those responsible for the trafficking network remains a top priority, adding that all perpetrators; regardless of nationality, must be held accountable under the law.
She also highlighted the inhumane conditions faced by the migrants, who reportedly spent six to seven days at sea without adequate food and water, leading to multiple deaths.
Calling for stronger global action, she urged the dismantling of such criminal networks to prevent further loss of life, describing human trafficking as “a grave violation of human dignity.”
Officials added that efforts are ongoing through Bangladesh missions in Greece and Libya to coordinate rescue operations, identify victims and ensure the safe repatriation of affected nationals.
