Shammo murder: Final probe report submitted to DU VC

The investigation committee formed to probe the death of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, who was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13, submitted its final report to the vice-chancellor on Monday.

Professor Md Siddiqur Rahman Khan, dean of the Faculty of Arts and convener of the committee, formally handed over the report to Vice Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmad Khan at the VC’s office in on Monday morning.

Also present were Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, proctor of the university, and Associate Professor Sharmin Kabir, assistant proctor and the committee’s member-secretary.

Details about the probe report could not be known immediately.

According to university sources, the report was prepared following due procedures. Necessary actions will be taken in accordance with university regulations after the findings are reviewed.

On the night of May 13, Shammo, a student at the Institute of Education and Research of Dhaka University, was stabbed by a group of individuals near Suhrawardy Udyan. He was rescued by classmates and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead.

A murder case was later filed with Shahbagh Police Station in connection with the incident.

In response, the vice chancellor formed a seven-member investigation committee headed by Professor Siddiqur Rahman.

The committee, comprising senior faculty members from various departments, was later expanded to include Barrister Nurul Azim as a co-opted member.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal staged a sit-in in front of the vice chancellor’s office today.

The Dhaka University unit of JCD organised and participated in the protest, led by its President Ganesh Chandra Roy and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon.

The sit-in began at 12:00pm and continued until 2:20pm.

Ganesh said, “Shammo, a brilliant student of Dhaka University, was murdered on campus. It has been 13 days, yet we have not seen any visible steps toward justice for Shammo. The VC and the proctor of the university have failed to provide any satisfactory answers.”
