A Dhaka court has granted remand for three individuals arrested in connection with the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Dhaka University student and Chhatra Dal leader.
Following a hearing on Monday afternoon (July 28), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farjana Haque placed Mehedi Hasan, 25, and Md Hridoy Islam, 24, on two-day remand each, while Md Ripon, 20, was placed on a one-day remand.
The case’s investigating officer, Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Md Akhtar Morshed, produced the accused before the court earlier in the day and sought a four-day remand for each.
In the remand plea, police said the correct names and addresses of the accused needed to be confirmed to prevent them from obtaining bail and absconding, which could obstruct the legal process.
The application stated that the initial investigation confirmed the accused were directly involved in the incident as detailed in the first information report (FIR), and described them as habitual offenders.
Interrogation in police custody was deemed necessary to verify their identities and any previous criminal records.
Lawyers representing the accused applied for bail and sought cancellation of the remand request.
Additional Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon opposed the plea on behalf of the state.
After hearing both sides, the court granted remand for the three accused.
Shammo was hacked with sharp weapons by unidentified individuals on 13 May around 11:45pm while returning to campus from Suhrawardy Udyan on a motorcycle with two of his university friends.
Friends rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead shortly after midnight.
The following morning, the victim’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station against 10 to 12 unidentified individuals.
According to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the three remanded suspects were among 11 people arrested on 27 May in connection with the incident.
