A Dhaka court on Friday sent Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury to jail in a case filed over the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim last year.
The former BNP leader had joined a separate political party “Trinamool BNP” before the 7 January elections this year.
Producing Shamsher before the court, the investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Tanmoy Kumar Biswas sought to keep the former BNP leader confined until the completion of investigation into the murder.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Afnan Sumi accepted the plea and sent Shamsher to jail. A day earlier, Shamsher was arrested by law enforcers from his Banani residence in the capital.
On 28 October 2023, Shamim was killed when demonstrating with fellow BNP leaders to press home the party’s one-point demand of removing the Awami League government from power and holding elections under an apolitical government.
On 24 September this year, a case was filed over the Shamim murder incident.
Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury resigned from all posts in BNP in 2015. About three years later, he joined Bikalpa Dhara, a political party led by another former BNP leader AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury. In September last year, he became the chairperson of Trinamool Congress, a political party founded by former BNP leader Nazmul Huda.
Later, the Election Commission allowed Trinamool Congress to take part in the 7 January general elections.
