Members of transgender community in collaboration with locals on Monday staged demonstrations including forming human chain and bringing out procession in Sirajganj town demanding fair investigation and trial for Mim, who was allegedly killed in Narayanganj Bandar area on August 2.

More than 50 transgender gathered at Baza’ar station area in the town at around 11:00am and formed a human chain there. Later, they brought out a procession that marched the main roads in the town and ended in front of the Sadar police station. Then, the demonstrators besieged Sirajganj Sadar Police Station demanding justice for Mim and protesting non-cooperation of police. They laid siege to the Sadar Police Station for refusal to file a case with the police station against murderers, when they went there on the date of occurrence.

Local transgender (hermaphrodite/ eunuch) leader Kanchi said, “My niece Mim got married off with Md. Saju Sarder of Meghla Boubaza’ar area in Narayanganj district about three years ago. After the marriage, Saju used to torture my niece Mim for dowry. On Saturday last (August 2), Mim’s husband Saju, his mother and an uncle brought her body to Sirajganj’s Kandapara and informed that she committed suicide. Due to their suspicious attitude, we doubted about the death of my niece and went to Sirajganj Sadar police station to lodge a case in this connection, but police refused to file any case with the thana. Police also asked to file case with Narayanganj police station on the plea of occurrence place. When we went to Narayanganj to lodge the case, Narayanganj police also denied registering any case in this connection. As a result, we are being harassed to lodge case and get fair justice.

Md. Mokhlesur Rahman, Officer in Charge of Sadar police station said, “As the occurrence place was in Narayanganj, we can’t lodge any case in this connection here. This is why, we requested them to go to Narayanganj for filing case with the respective police station.”

The demonstrators threatened for tougher movements, if exemplary punishment is not ensured in this connection.
