Sonalia-Karatia railway station was inaugurated in Tangail on Saturday morning, expanding rail connectivity for residents of several upazilas in the district.
The station, located in Karatia area of Tangail Sadar Upazila, was inaugurated by Bangladesh Railway Director General Afzal Hossain, who formally opened the facility by cutting a ribbon and waving a green flag.
Speaking at the inauguration, Bangladesh Railway Director General Afzal Hossain said train operations at the station will initially begin with the Rajshahi Mail local service.
He said the number of trains stopping at the station will be increased gradually, including the addition of Sirajganj Express, and there are also plans to introduce a Tangail commuter train service in the future.
Among those present at the event were Pakshi Railway Division Manager Liakat Sharif Khan, Divisional Commercial Officer Goutam Kumar Kundu, former member of parliament Morshed Ali Khan Panni, and HM Institute and College Principal Abul Kalam Azad.
Local residents said the opening of the station will benefit several lakh people from Basail and Sakhipur upazilas, as well as students and visitors of the historic Government Sadat College and traders associated with Karatia Hat.
They said the new station is expected to ease travel, boost local commerce, and strengthen the district’s rail communication with other parts of the country.
