A Dhaka court has placed Mushfiq Uddin Tagar, convicted in the 2002 Buet student Sabekun Nahar Sony murder case, on a two-day remand in connection with an arms case filed at Lalbagh Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiak passed the order on Saturday (September20) after a hearing.
Earlier, investigating officer SI Motiar Rahman Bulbul of Lalbagh Police Station produced Tagar before the court and sought a five-day remand.
The accused’s lawyer, Mosleh Uddin Bhuiyan, applied for bail and cancellation of the remand, which was opposed by the state. After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand.
The remand application stated that interrogation in police custody was necessary to uncover details of the case, including information about the recovered weapons, the possibility of additional arms, and the involvement of others.
Tagar was arrested by RAB from the Azimpur area under Lalbagh Police Station on Thursday (18 September). At the time, a revolver and 156 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
According to the case, RAB-3 received information that Tagar was engaged in drug-related activities at a house in China Building Alley, Azimpur. When RAB personnel raided the house, he attempted to flee but was detained.
During interrogation, Tagar admitted to possessing a revolver and ammunition. Based on his statement, a foreign revolver, an iron magazine, a wooden pistol grip, a misfired bullet, 155 rounds of .22 rifle bullets, an empty shotgun cartridge, two human-faced masks, and two mobile phones were recovered.
He could not produce valid documents for the weapons. RAB-3 Company Commander Md Khalequzzaman later filed the case yesterday (19 September).
Notably, Tagar was previously convicted and served a jail term in the 2002 Sony murder case.
Sabekun Nahar Sony, a Buet student, was killed on 8 June 2002 when two factions of Buet Chhatra Dal clashed on campus over a tender. She was struck by a stray bullet while returning to her dormitory.
Tagar, a former Chhatra Dal leader, was arrested on 24 June 2003 and sentenced to death along with two others in the case on 29 June that year.
The High Court later commuted the sentences to life imprisonment on 10 March 2006. He was released on 20 August 2020 after serving his jail term.
