The number of Royal Bengal Tigers in the Sundarbans has increased by 19 over the past 10 years, reaching 125, according to the latest survey.

“In 2014, there were 106 tigers in the Sundarbans. The 2018 survey recorded 114 tigers, and the most recent 2024 survey shows the number has risen to 125,” Chief Conservator of Forests Md Amir Hossain Chowdhury said on Tuesday (July 29).

He shared the data at an event held at the Forest Department headquarters in Agargaon to mark World Tiger Day, which this year is being observed with the theme ‘Harmonious coexistence between humans and tigers.’

Speakers at the programme warned that, despite the increase in numbers, tigers in the Sundarbans remain under threat due to poaching and the destruction of their natural habitat.
