A Dhaka Special Judges’ Court on Thursday acquitted BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and six others in a Tk 21 crore bribery case.

Judge Md Abu Taher of Dhaka Special Judges’ Court-3 issued this order.

The six others are Bashundhara Group chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan and his two sons Shafiat Sobhan Sanveer and Sadat Sobhan; Miah Nur Uddin Apu, the then APS of Tarique Rahman; Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal and Abu Sufian.

The case, filed on October 4, 2007, at Ramna Police Station, alleged that the bribe was intended to secure legal immunity for Safiat Sobhan Sanvir in the murder case of Basundhara Group director Sabbir. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the charge sheet against the accused on April 24, 2008, and the court framed charges on July 14 the same year.

Earlier, on March 6, 2025, the Appellate Division acquitted Tarique Rahman and Giasuddin Al Mamun in a separate money laundering case.
