BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman on Saturday have completed the biometric registration required to become voters, following his historic return to Bangladesh.

The pair visited the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka today to enrol for National Identity Cards. Rahman arrived at the EC building after earlier visits to the graves of Osman Hadi and national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Officials collected his fingerprints, iris scan, and other biometric data. This information will be uploaded to the central server, where an automated system will generate an NID number.

NID Wing Director General ASM Humayun Kabir said the technical process allows for no human intervention. “For some people it takes five hours, for others it can take more than ten,” he said. The EC, however, has made maximum preparations to ensure the BNP acting chairman receives his NID in the shortest possible time to submit his nomination papers.

Kabir confirmed that, following verification and approval, the physical NID would be ready within a period of seven to 24 hours.

On Thursday morning, December 25, Tarique Rahman returned home after living in London for over 17 years from where he was directing party affairs. He is expected to take part in the upcoming 13th parliamentary elections.
