A court in Dhaka on Monday placed content creator Tawhid Afridi, son of Nasir Uddin Sathi, chairman of the private television channel MyTV, on a five-day remand in connection with the murder case of Asadul Haque Babu during the anti-discrimination movement in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police produced him before the court.

Earlier on the day, CID Police Inspector Khan Md Erfan, also the investigating officer of the case, filed a remand petition seeking seven days for quizzing Tawhid, while the defence submitted a bail plea cancelling the remand petition.

After holding a hearing, the court allowed the investigating officer to interrogate the accused for five days.

Tawhid Afridi was arrested on Sunday night by a CID team in Barishal. On 17 August, his father Nasir Uddin was arrested in Gulshan, Dhaka. The court approved a five-day remand for Nasir Uddin the following day.

According to the case statement, on 5 August last year, during the anti-discrimination movement, Asadul Haque Babu participated in a protest on Paka Road in the Jatrabari area.

Around 2:30pm that day, he was shot at during demonstrations by the accused. Later, he was taken to a hospital, where physicians declared him dead.

On 30 August last year, the victim’s father, Joynal Abedin, filed a murder case with Jatrabari Police Station against 25 people, including the ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

In the first information report, Nasir Uddin and Tawhid Afridi were listed as the 22nd and 11th accused, respectively.
