TDS Desk:
Railway authorities have decided to stop trains from Chattogram due to the severe floods in Feni and Cumilla.
From Thursday (August 22) afternoon, train communications between Chattogram and other parts of the country have been suspended. However, Dhaka-bound Subarna Express and Sylhet-bound Paharika Express left Chattogram station in the morning. But due to the flood, the trains could not reach their destination.
Talking to the railway officials, it is known that the railway line from Feni to Fazilpur has been submerged in water. In many places, water is flowing over the railway bridge. And there have been reports of the railway line being damaged in Cumilla by the flood water. Flood water has accumulated at Feni station.
A total of, 11 intercity trains run daily from Chattogram to Dhaka, Jamalpur, Sylhet and Chandpur. Apart from this, local and commuter trains run regularly in Cox’s Bazar, Nazirhat, Chandpur, Dhaka and Mymensingh.
This was confirmed by Mohammad Nazmul Islam, the general manager of the eastern region of the railway.
He said the flood situation is very bad. Especially in Feni, water is moving over railway lines and railway bridges. The same situation happened on a railway bridge in Sylhet. A landslide was also reported on Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar railway line. It is very dangerous to drive the train in this condition. Therefore, it has been decided to stop train movement for the safety of passengers and railway assets. A decision will be taken regarding train movement once the flood situation normalizes.
Chattogram station manager Mohammad Moniruzzaman said that due to floods, railway lines have been submerged in many places. I heard that the railway line was washed away in Cumilla by the flood water. Due to these reasons, the higher authorities have asked to stop the train movement for the time being.
The flood situation in Cumilla and Feni continued to deteriorate from yesterday (Wednesday). Several upazilas of Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali, Khagrachhari and Chattogram have been flooded due to heavy rains and upstream from India. The flood situation has worsened in these districts till the last news on Thursday morning. The rain continues.
