BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the death sentences handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal to ousted premier Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal for crimes against humanity committed during last July’s uprising have upheld justice.
He made the remarks in an immediate reaction following the announcement of the verdict on Monday.
Salahuddin Ahmed said the ruling marks a milestone in the tribunal’s pursuit of justice. Although the punishment is not fully commensurate with the gravity of the crimes, he noted, the verdict will serve as a deterrent to ensure that no future government or individual can descend into fascism, autocracy, or dictatorship.
He added that the decision demonstrates that no matter how powerful a fascist regime becomes or how long it clings to authority, it must ultimately stand in the dock to face justice.
