Jamuna, Jhenai rivers flowing above danger level

TDS Desk:

Due to torrential rains and upstream flow, all rivers in Tangail have risen, resulting in the flooding of lower areas in four upazilas and leaving thousands of people trapped.

The Jamuna and Jhenai rivers are flowing 20cm and 78cm above the danger level, respectively, and river erosion has occurred in several areas.

According to the Tangail Water Development Board, as of 9am on Friday, the Jamuna River was flowing 20cm above the danger level at Porabari point, and the Jhenai River was 78cm above the danger level at Jokar Char point. The Dhaleshwari River has risen by 41cm at Elasin point, flowing 21cm below the flood line. Similarly, the water levels of the Fatikjani, Banshai, and other rivers have also increased significantly.

Thousands of residents in villages across Bhuapur, Gopalpur, Kalihati, and Sadar upazilas have become waterlogged. Croplands have been submerged due to river erosion in several areas. Residents are facing additional fears of snakes, particularly Russell’s vipers.

The rising water has caused extensive disruptions, including damage to roads and houses in the affected areas. Traders in the flooded markets are struggling, and erosion has worsened in several parts of the district.

Sajjad Hossain, executive engineer of the Tangail Water Development Board, said that the water levels of all rivers, including the Jamuna, Jhenai, and Dhaleshwari, have increased due to heavy rains and upstream flow.

He warned that the water levels are expected to continue rising, posing a risk of further flooding. Measures, including the emergency dumping of geobags, are being taken to address river erosion.

Tangail Deputy Commissioner Kaisarul Islam noted that the downstream water is rising due to the water coming from upstream, affecting croplands in Arjuna union and potentially neighbouring Nikrail and Gabsara unions.

He assured that the district administration have prepared adequate relief and taken all necessary precautions to handle the flood situation.
