Some 46,000 people in the remote char areas of Tangail Sadar upazila, Bhuapur and Kalihati upazilas are stranded in floodwaters, according to district administration sources, as the flood situation in Tangail remains unchanged in some areas and has worsened in others.
In the 24 hours till 6am on Monday, water levels in the Jhenai and Jamuna rivers slightly decreased in Tangail, but levels in other rivers continued to rise.
Numerous homes, markets, farmlands and other infrastructures in several upazilas were still submerged in floodwaters.
The water level of the Jhenai River at the Jokarchar point decreased by 3cm but is still 97cm above the danger level. Similarly, the Jamuna River’s water level at the Porabari point decreased by 3cm but remains 33cm above the danger mark.
On the other hand, the water level of the Dhaleshwari River at the Elasin point increased by 5cm, now flowing 24cm above the danger level.
Additionally, the water levels of the Fatikjani River at the Nalchapa Bridge point rose by 17cm and the Banshai River by 8cm at the Kauljani point, 9cm at the Mirzapur point and 12cm at the Madhupur point.
Rezaul and Bellal from Bhuapur said they lived by the Jamuna River, and every year, they had to fight for survival.
They added that this year’s flood had caused them significant damage.
The two complained that when the floodwater entered their homes, the strong currents partially destroyed the yards of some of their houses, adding that they had been trapped in water for the past five to seven days.
Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Kaisarul Islam said the district administration had received 800 tons of rice and Tk15 lakh for flood relief.
Food items such as rice, lentils, oil, sugar and water purification tablets along with water containers were distributed among 500 families in the flood-affected areas on Monday, he added.
