During a raid at the residence of former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank Sitangshu Kumar (SK) Sur Chowdhury on Sunday, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) recovered Tk17.25 lakh and some documents.
The raid was conducted at SK Sur’s Dhanmondi residence, led by ACC Director Kazi Sayemuzzaman.
On January 14, an ACC team led by Deputy Director Nazmul Hossain arrested SK Sur Chowdhury. He is currently in jail.
SK Sur Chowdhury had been under suspicion since February 5, 2016, for his alleged involvement in the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist.
ACC sources claim that SK Sur Chowdhury played a significant role in covering up the reserve heist.
The ACC reportedly possesses important information regarding this and may interrogate him under remand.
As a result, both current and former top officials of Bangladesh Bank involved in the reserve heist are under ACC surveillance.
SK Sur Chowdhury’s name also surfaced in connection with financial scandals linked to the infamous money launderer Prashanta Kumar Halder (PK Halder).
In 2022, the ACC launched an investigation against SK Sur and others related to the case.
On March 29 of the same year, he was summoned and interrogated by the ACC.
He was questioned about the embezzlement of over Tk2,500 crore from International Leasing and Financial Services Limited (ILFSL).
SK Sur Chowdhury retired from his position as Deputy Governor in January 2018.
