A Dhaka court has issued a travel ban on former Sirajganj-1 lawmaker Tanvir Shakil Joy and four others over corruption allegations.
The individuals facing the bans are Tanvir’s wife Sabrina Sultana Chowdhury, his mother, Laila Arjumand Banu; his brother, Tamal Monsur; and former Health Minister Md Nasim’s personal secretary, Mir Mosharraf Hossain.
Senior Special Judge Sabbir Foyez of Dhaka Metropolitan Court passed the order on Tuesday after Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Afroza Haque Khan filed a petition seeking the travel restrictions.
The petition states that the accused allegedly conducted transactions through bank accounts held in their own names and in the names of associates, accumulating wealth beyond their known sources of income.
To facilitate the investigation, an inquiry team has been formed. During the probe, credible sources indicated that the accused might attempt to flee the country.
Allowing them to leave the country could delay evidence collection and hinder the investigation. Therefore, a travel ban is necessary, the petition added.
Tanvir Shakil Joy was first elected to parliament from Sirajganj-1 in the 2008 9th National Parliamentary Election as a candidate of the Awami League.
He was re-elected in a 2020 by-election from the same constituency and again won the seat as an Awami League candidate in the controversial 2024 national election.
Tanvir also serves as Vice President of the Central Committee of the Bangladesh Awami Swechasebak League.
