The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution designating 6 July as “World Rural Development Day” during its 78th session’s plenary on Friday.

Initiated by Bangladesh and supported by a core group including India, Nepal, Peru, the Philippines, and Thailand, this resolution underscores the commitment to enhancing rural livelihoods worldwide, said a press release issued by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations in New York.

This milestone resolution, the first steered by Bangladesh following the installation of its Interim Government, aims to foster equal opportunities and address the needs of rural populations in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The adoption process, devoid of voting, saw 43 countries rallying as co-sponsors, highlighting the global consensus on the significance of rural development.

Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, presented the resolution, articulating the crucial role of sustainable and inclusive rural development in meeting the SDGs by 2030.

He highlighted key areas such as poverty alleviation, food production, socio-economic advancement, and ecosystem restoration.

The choice of July 6 commemorates the founding date of the Center for Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) in 1979, acknowledging its pivotal role in rural development across the Asia-Pacific region.

The resolution encourages all UN Member States, alongside international and regional organizations, NGOs, and other stakeholders, to observe this day through activities tailored to national and regional contexts.

These efforts are aimed at promoting sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for rural communities.

Besides, the UN Secretary-General has been requested to notify all relevant parties to ensure the observance of World Rural Development Day, fostering a collaborative approach to global rural development initiatives.
