Outgoing Secretary of Election Commission (EC) Jahangir Alam today said that 38 percent of votes were cast in 87 upazilas in the third phase of upazila parishad (UP) elections.
“The voting rate, however, may increase. Because the complete information of 87 centers was unavailable,” he said.
Outgoing EC Secretary Jahangir Alam informed this at a joint press conference of the outgoing secretary and new secretary Shafiul Azim at the Agargaon Narbachan Bhaban in the capital on Thursday (May 30).
“You wanted information. Sometimes there was no information. You used to poke me. I might treat you in a way that is not befitting. But we had no lack of transparency,” the outgoing EC Secretary told reporters.
He said, “I did not want to trouble you with my behavior. However, I urge all to look at me with forgiveness during the farewell.”
Mentioning that he got the support of the media, the outgoing EC Secretary said that you (media) have introduced us to the people.
After serving as Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary in the Public Security Division at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jahangir Alam was promoted to Secretary in 2022 and took charge of the Election Commission. Within his tenure, the 12th National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad) elections were held on January 7 this year.
On May 21, Jahangir Alam was transferred by the Ministry of Public Administration to the post of Secretary of the Public Security Division.
