TDS Desk:
Prices of all kinds of vegetables and potatoes have fallen, while fish prices have gradually risen in recent weeks.
Consumers get almost all types of vegetables at much lower prices at the fresh markets.
In particular, fish like tilapia and pangush, which are known as affordable options, are now selling for over Tk200 per kilogram, causing problems for people from low-income groups.
The surge in winter vegetable supply has led to lower prices for buyers.
Such a scenario was witnessed during a visit to different kitchen markets in the capital’s Mirpur 6, 13, Shewrapara and Mohammadpur on Friday.
At the kitchen markets, eggplant was sold at Tk40-50 per kg, cabbage and cauliflower at Tk25-30 per piece, beans at Tk30-40, yardlong beans at Tk60 per kg, radish at Tk20 per kg, cucumber at Tk40-50 per kg, taro stolon at Tk60 per kg, turnip at Tk40 per kg, carrot at Tk50 per kg, papaya at Tk25-30 per kg, ridge gourd and snake gourd at Tk70 per kg, tomato at Tk50 per kg and green chilli at Tk80 per kg in the past two weeks.
Potato and onion prices remain unchanged at Tk35-40 per kg and Tk50-60 per kg, respectively.
Fish sellers assert that demand for fish surges during the start of the year and due to weddings and other events during the winter.
However, the market supply has not increased in line with demand, resulting in a price increase, they observed.
The price of tilapia and pangus has increased to Tk200-220 per kg from Tk180-200 per kg, pabda increased to Tk360-400 per kg from Tk320 per kg, farmed shing increased to Tk500-550 per kg from Tk450 per kg, one-kg-sized rui and katla increased to Tk300-320 per kg from Tk250-280 per kg, large rui and katla increased to Tk400-500 per kg from Tk350-380 per kg.
