National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has declared that if justice over the attack on their rally venue is not delivered promptly, their party will return to “liberate Gopalganj from Mujibism” with their own hands.
He made the remarks on Wednesday (July 16) during a rally in Gopalganj under the banner of the NCP’s “March to Gopalganj” programme, part of the party’s broader campaign titled “July Procession to Build the Nation”.
Nahid said, “Today, the Mujibists tried to obstruct us — they will be answered. If we make a declaration from here today, people from all across Bangladesh will flock to Gopalganj.”
He accused followers of Mujibism of tarnishing the legacy of the Liberation War and polluting the name of Gopalganj.
“We will reclaim and uplift Gopalganj once again,” he said.
According to Nahid, the local population would have filled the rally grounds had there not been attempts to instil fear and prevent public participation.
“We did not come here to change the name of Gopalganj. We came to make a promise: that in the new Bangladesh we envision, the rights of Gopalganj’s people will be protected,” he said.
The rally also saw participation from other senior NCP leaders, including Chief Organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah, Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam, and Dr Tasnim Zara, among others.
