A video showing a male commuter beating a woman on a moving local bus for allegedly not wearing an orna (scarf) has gone viral on social media.
The video, circulating on Facebook, shows an altercation between the woman and the man. At one point, the man begins repeatedly hitting the woman. Other commuters on the bus appear indifferent to the assault and make no attempt to help her.
There are claims that the woman was assaulted and verbally abused for not wearing an orna or covering, but further details have yet to emerge.
Netizens, however, are in uproar over the assault on the woman, regardless of the reason behind it.
A netizen has written in a Facebook post: “I don’t wear an orna (scarf), nor do I like wearing one. But for the sake of ‘safety’ while moving through different places, I feel compelled to drape it. This is the reality for most women in this country.”
“In the video, the woman is harassed and physically assaulted because of her clothing. Everyone on the bus remains silent, sitting in their seats. The perpetrator’s face is clearly visible in the footage. He must be brought to justice within 24 hours.” However, has not yet been able to reach the woman for comment.
